WORLD NEWS HIGHLIGHT OF THE WEEK

Matternet wins comprehensive certification for autonomous flight in Switzerland.  The scope of this approval is quite amazing and historic. The Swiss Federal Office for Civil Aviation (FOCA) has granted Matternet a certification allowing their delivery drones to fly autonomously over cities at any time of day or night - with payloads AND beyond visual line of site (BVLOS). Clearing this regulatory hurdle means that by early next year, Matternet partner Swiss Post plans to use the drones to deliver blood samples and other small parcels between hospitals in Lugano, a smaller city with a population of about 56,000.  For more on this news see this article on TechCrunch.  Switzerland will be a country to watch for the most advanced and experienced drone pilots!

BRIGHT SPOT OF THE WEEK

This week we are happy to feature one of our members.  Cameron Cabading is an engineering student at St. Mary's College of California, located in the city of Moraga. Cameron is leading many efforts with drones inside and outside of the college. He is President of the Engineering Club, which has a dedicated drone club as one of its efforts.  One of their projects is to build a custom FPV racing drone. (FPV is First Person Viewer for those new to the drone world.)

Cameron is also a volunteer officer with the East Bay Chapter of NSBE - the National Society of Black Engineers. Cameron recently earned a trip to the NSBE 43rd National Convention held in Kansas City, Missouri to talk about drones.  Congratulations and kudos for all of your constructive efforts to create a better world with more drone pilots, Cameron!

Cameron's goal after college is to become a drone designer and consultant. While in college he is looking for an internship as a drone technician.  He will be someone to watch and admire going forward based on the initiative and leadership he has demonstrated so far.  If you happen to be looking for a sharp young professional in California to help your company with drones, go to the NSBE Leadership page, click on the photo of Cameron wearing the FPV goggles, and get in touch with Cameron on LinkedIn.

Want to share and promote some good news about your efforts in the drone world?  Contact us here or write a comment below so we can learn more about your efforts to help drone pilots fly safely and successfully in your part of the world.

LESSON OF THE WEEK

Drone Pilot Collapses on the Job.  This story involves a Silicon Valley-based company everybody knows that has an internal drone program. (Something about building books full of faces.) The lesson here is that in our race to do amazing things with drones, we CAN'T FORGET THE PEOPLE.  (That's why we are the Drone Pilots Federation - not the Drone Federation.)  Story here on Business Insider. Thanks to DPF member Joshua Appleman in Utah for bringing this story to our attention.  (Joshua is a GIS/GPS Professional and FAA Part 107 Certified sUAS pilot with a drone business who has a nice YouTube channel.)

SAFETY MESSAGE

For those in the USA, the FAA has added NOTAMS FOR ALL UAS around 133 military sites.  These become effective on 14 April and are permanent 24/7/365 until further notice. Go to the FAA PAGE ON AIRSPACE RESTRICTIONS for details.  Also very handy is an interactive FAA map.

If you need help understanding why this is a safety message, violating these NOTAMS may cause your drone to become a danger to others as falling object(s) after it is neutralized by unspecified “enforcement actions.” Never mind the safety risks to your clean legal record...

SACRAMENTO CHAPTER NEWS

We have been pursuing plans to hold a regional outdoor event for International Drone Day.  Unfortunately we regret to inform everyone that multiple challenges with venue logistics, insurance needs, and lead time for marketing all combined to create an unfeasible situation for us to have a successful event.  If you happen to be planning a drone-related event for May 6th in the Sacramento, California region or know someone else who is, please get in touch with us now.

Here's an earlier alternative: Flite Test WEST on April 27th, to April 30th 2017.  To be held at 900 Fairgrounds Dr, Vallejo, CA 94589 USA.  We aren't involved or affiliated with this event but it is shaping up to be an amazing and fun event.  ADVANCED REGISTRATION is advised. Check it out here: http://www.flitefest.com/west/
